SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
By Alice Nolan Merlone
When this tragedy occurred, I had been working on a series of tulips. I had begun a new one in purple, a color I seldom used. I put it aside and began the series of 9-11 images, and for months, that is all that I did in my printmaking. During this period, I created a woodcut of the American Flagg, and numerous stencils, and used these elements in my prints. At one point I returned to the purple flowers, and added a collagraph, and titled it Tragedy and Hope. This image was included in a 9-11 exhibition in 2002 at the Fitchburg Art Museum, Fitchburg, MA. Later, I added text to one of the prints, Revisiting the Loss.
